Enhancing Farmer Success with Digital Tools: A Practical Guide for Field Support (Self-Paced)

This course seeks to enhance the capacity of extension workers and other agricultural field support providers with the skills needed to assess and implement digital tools that address farmers’ challenges. The course indirectly enhances the capacity of farmer organizations, NGOs, governments, input suppliers, and other farmer facing organizations to utilize digital tools in their agricultural field support work.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Assess the potential and benefits of digital tools in meeting farmers-identified needs and challenges within the agriculture value chain.
  • Identify unique aspects of designing and implementing ICT4Ag projects for farmers, success factors and potential barriers, and their role as champions for digital implementation.
  • Understand practical applications of digital tools for extension workers and digital tools to support farmers.
  • Apply models and approaches for training and supporting farmers to identify and use digital tools in enhancing agricultural practices.
  • Understand how to regularly check and improve the use of digital tools to ensure they are effectively helping farmers.

Basics of the Principles for Digital Development in Agriculture (Self-Paced)

This course will introduce you to the Digital Development Principles and explore how they can be applied in an agricultural project/intervention that has a digital technology component.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the history of principles of digital development.
  • Understand why Digital Development Principles are valuable.
  • Describe each Digital Development Principle and its core tenets.
  • Apply digital tools and resources, that are inclusive of Digital Development Principles’ core tenets, to an agricultural project’s lifecycle.
  • Articulate the advantages of including or adhering to Digital Development Principles in digital technologies-supported agricultural initiatives.
  • Understand emerging digital technologies and concerns in agriculture.
  • Participate as an active member of the Digital Development Principles community.

Basics of Digital Agriculture Ecosystems and Interoperability (Self-Paced)

This course will introduce you to Digital Agriculture Ecosystems and interoperability within agriculture and explore how these concepts can be applied in an agricultural project/intervention that has a digital technology component.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define ICT4D and its use cases in agriculture, and classify the types of technologies used.
  • Understand fragmentation and other challenges associated with implementing ICT4D in agriculture.
  • Describe the foundations of digital transformation and the factors that drive successful implementation of digital agricultural technologies.
  • Classify the dimensions of the enabling environment and understand the methods to assess it.
  • Understand how data is used in agriculture to transform digital agriculture systems from fragmented to interoperable.

Basics of Digital Rural Finance for Agriculture (Self-Paced)

This course will introduce you to digital finance within agriculture and explore how these digital services and tools can be applied in an agricultural project/intervention that has a financial component.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Draw insights from IFAD’s project portfolio on the relevance of digital technologies to advance financial inclusion in rural areas and deliver on IFAD financial strategy for smallholder farmers.
  • Assess the financial needs of smallholder farmers and how digital technologies can be leveraged to better address them.
  • Anticipate benefits and challenges derived from the deployment of digital financial initiatives in rural areas.
  • Appreciate the importance of leveraging a digital ecosystem to facilitate the implementation and scaling up of digital financial projects.
  • Use real examples to understand the principles underlying the design and implementation of digital financial initiatives.
